Mustang Trek

Mustang Trek

Nepal is famous all across the world for its unparalleled natural beauty. Nestled between two giant countries India and China, it has been successfully retaining its uniqueness till date. As one of the oldest countries in Asia, it is rich in culture and tradition. Though there are several touristic destinations, Mustang has gained its popularity due to its distinctive characteristics. The whole Mustang region is the sum of Lower Mustang and Upper Mustang separated by a fascinating village called Kagbeni. Upper Mustang, the land of forbidden geographically resembles Tibet and possesses arid topography. The King of Mustang was using some kind of state power as a separate king within the boundary of Nepal. His king status went after the country decided to abolish monarchy in 2008. However, he still lives in his old palace, and people of Upper Mustang give respect to him. Upper Mustang is not just a holiday destination but also an important place with archaeological importance. The region is believed to be a part of the ancient Silk Road bridging China/Tibet to Indian subcontinent. Indeed, the Upper Mustang trek is absolutely astonishing.

People of Mustang got a very rare chance to contact the rest of Nepal for hundreds of years because of which they still show the real face of mountain people. Mustang grows sufficient crops and vegetables they need. Mainly, villagers involve in sheep farming for earning from centuries. Nowadays, apple farming has become quite popular in this region. Trekking to Upper Mustang is quite similar to trekking in Tibet as this region is also a part of Tibetan plateau. Upper Mustang trek requires a special trekking permit and mandatory trekking guide having valid trekking guide license. Mustang falls under the rain shadow region, thus it provides a great opportunity for trekking even during the monsoon period. Since the Mustang receives very little or no precipitation during monsoon, Kaligandaki valley remains almost dry. The Mustang remains mostly windy and very cold in winter. Thus, we do not recommend Mustang as a winter trekking destination.

Lo–Manthang, the capital of the forbidden kingdom, is worth staying a couple of days more exploring the royal palace, local monasteries, hilltop fort, ancient caves and Tibetan border. Depending on your timeframe, bespoke itinerary can be designed. Please allow us to offer you Mustang trek packages according to your requirements.
